A Macon County man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly failing to register a new Instagram account with the sheriff’s office, a violation of Missouri’s sex offender registry requirements.
Jarrod Lee Vroom, 28, of Elmer, was taken into custody at the Macon County Sheriff’s Office after turning himself in around 9:43 p.m. Tuesday, according to a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Jermey Nelson.
Vroom is charged with failure to register as a sex offender, a Class E felony punishable by up to four years in prison. He is being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
The case began earlier Tuesday when Major Tyler Souther of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Theron Jackson, a probation officer with the Eastern District of Missouri, according to the probable cause statement. Jackson reported that Vroom, who is on federal probation and is a registered sex offender in Macon County, had created a new Instagram account under the username “jleev52” that was not listed on his registry.
Vroom had last updated his sex offender registration on July 14, but the Instagram account was not included in that filing, Nelson wrote.
Nelson responded to Vroom’s residence in Macon County and spoke with Vroom’s father, who agreed to bring his son to the sheriff’s office after he finished work. Vroom arrived at the after-hours entrance of the sheriff’s department and was placed under arrest.
Vroom was previously convicted of rape in Indiana, according to the criminal complaint filed by Macon County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Meisner. Under Missouri law, registered sex offenders are required to report any new social media accounts to law enforcement in person and in writing within three business days.
